No matter how badly you want a job, or how qualified you are for that job, if the hiring manager reads through your resume and immediately trips over hard-to-ignore mistakes, that resume is going to be tossed aside. And even if the text is error free, if it reads just like the previous 486 resumes she read, she is probably still going to put it in her not worth reading pile with the others. To make your resume noticeable you need to focus on doing three things impeccably well: being creative, being compelling, and staying error-free: 1) Be creative, be you! It sounds like a bad infomercial, but itâs true. Your resume has to reflect your personality. Its especially important if youâre working in a creative industry where innovation is required. Your resume has to echo your unconventional and artistic aspects. Sticking to a traditional resume template implies that youâre able to follow rules. Showing your creative touch, however, will give you a winning point against your competitors. 2) Be meaningful: Does your resume include empty words such as âbest of breedâ or âgo-getterâ or âstrategic thinkerâ? These words are in fact often blacklisted by hiring managers. Including them in your resume will mean you risk getting yourself ignored. While there was a time when these words impressed everyone in the human resources department, today theyre more often seen as annoying. These terms that were once seen as stellar personality qualities are now meaningless; when you actually use them you distract the person reading your resume from worthwhile information you could be mentioning. So instead of filling your resume with pointless jargon, use powerful keywords the hiring manager is looking for. You can find the most relevant resume keywords in job ads and the career market in general. For instance, if youâre a web designer, your resume needs to include keywords such as, HTML, CSS, Java Script, Illustrator, or mobile design. Relevant keywords will ensure your resume will pop up when the hiring manager is searching through hundreds of resumes for the ideal candidate. 3) Proofread: The importance of proofreading and editing cannot be stressed enough. Although a hiring manager knows one spelling mistake or typo can be forgivable, they will still tend to ruthlessly judge and even reject you for a linguistic slip-up. After all, if youve not bothered to correct your mistakes before youre hired, will you bother once youve gotten the job? Proofread your resume, and if youâre not sure you can spot all errors, hand it to a professional. You really cant risk getting rejected over an embarrassing typo, can you? 4) Make a good first (visual) impression: For better or worse, your accomplishments are not the only thing affecting the hiring managerâs decision. The first impression he or she will get is from the overall layout, formatting, and structure of your resume. Use a single font size and youll be boring the reader to death. Formatting, layout, and resume structure need to be carefully chosen to ensure your resume visually stands out without going overboard. To grab attention, your resume needs to follow a logical structure. For instance, put your contact information first and then your education. Work experience comes first if youâve graduated more than 10 years ago. Donât forget to use different fonts and font sizes to draw attention to the places you want the hiring manager to linger, namely on your successes and accomplishments. 5) State your objective: Many people advise against describing an objective on your resume, arguing that itâs redundant. We beg to differ; having an objective shows youâve taken the time to imagine yourself at the position youâre applying for. It reveals a person whoâs meticulous, determined, and driven. 6) Quantify your accomplishments: Rather than filling your resume with vague descriptions, you should try to paint a more direct picture with numbers. Numbers stick out. The reader wants to know the story behind a number, dont simply say something vague and impersonal, like this: Helped increase the online community of XXX company with strategic social media marketing initiatives.â Instead, help the reader really see the scope of the accomplishment by using a sentence like this: âIncreased social media engagement by XX% and achieved XX% lead generation increase for XXX company through social media marketing campaigns.â Implement these tips and you will make your resume more noticeable, increasing your chances of landing your dream job. Give and Take (This is the first of a series of posts on Give and Take by Adam Grant.) Adam Grant is a Wharton business professor, and his 2013 book entitled: Give and Take; Why Helping Others Drives Our Success is groundbreaking. His premise divides the human race (across race and culture, according to his research) into three categories: Givers, Takers, and Matchers. Weâve all met Takers, people who think mostly of themselves and value other people by how much they can gain from the relationship. They may not be awful people who lie, cheat and steal; they may simply be more interested in the receiving side of the equation than the giving. Weâve all met these people, too: they always have time to give advice or make an introduction for you. They are generous with recommendations: for great restaurants, resources for your needs, or ideas on how to work more efficiently. Iâve written about the Abundance Mindset before, and these people seem to share that quality. Matchers are people like most of us: they give, to varying degrees, but they usually have a conscious or unconscious ticker inside that keeps track of what theyâve done for you. They expect, eventually, to get a return on that investment. I took the late shift so you could attend a family event; Iâll expect the same consideration when I ask you for a favor. We invited that new couple to our home for dinner, but they never reciprocated; they probably wonât get another invitation. I gave my sister an expensive gift for her birthday, but she gave me a scented candle for mine; Iâm a little offended. You get the idea. Matchers, according to Grantâs research, make up 55 â" 60 percent of the general population; the rest is made up of Takers and Givers in about equal measure. Fairness is a concept thatâs hardwired into almost every creature; even monkey and dogs get resentful if they sense unfair treatment. In order to live together peacefully and be able to conduct business, matching makes the most sense for us as a society. What makes Givers different? How often do they get taken advantage of by Takers? Are they just naïve, or do they know something we donât know? These are the questions Grant wanted to answer through research. Grant writes âBeing a Giver who enjoys helping others can be inefficient in the short run but surprisingly productive in the long run.â He found that givers do get taken advantage of; they sometimes have trouble with setting boundaries, saying no, and taking on activities that donât advance their own goals or careers. They can be too generous, giving away the best opportunities, giving up what they want so others can have more. But eventually, givers wind up building a network of champions who help them succeed as well. Grantâs research found that givers can change the culture, inspiring whole organizations to become more giving (even the takers, who may submit to peer pressure to give or opt out of the organization.) Takers can be geniuses, but givers can create geniuses by being generous with support, praise and opportunities to do and learn more. Career Coach Advice Beware of the Golden Handcuffs I was on a group coaching call and one of the participants said, âRemember, the golden handcuffs only get tighter.â Iâd never heard this before, but it is so true! Since then Iâve heard it countless times from clients. Theyâre stuck in a job because of the high salary or the benefits. They have built a lifestyle around those things and donât know if they can give them up. It can feel like a prison sentence, because youâre staying for the wrong reasons. Donât get me wrong: a salary and benefits are good things. The bad thing is when we feel trapped rather than feeling secure and happy about them. No one wants to feel that way. Itâs true one person can feel trapped in a job while another can feel empowered and fulfilled in that same job. Ultimately itâs about being âat choice.â You may wonder how this is different from Tip 3: Donât settle. But it is. Golden handcuffs come into play when youâve taken a job you think youâll like and then stay there primarily because of the perks. Donât settle is about not taking a job in the first place when your gut reaction says, âRun for the nearest door.â Angela was in pharmaceutical sales. She told me it seemed like every time her company sensed their reps were becoming unhappy at work, it gave them a perk to add to their benefits portfolios: a new cell phone, a small bonus, a new company car. Itâs not to say these things in and of themselves are bad you might be saying,âHey, these things sound great! Iâd love to have a new car.â but the point is: not one of these reps was happy with their jobs. Instead of being excited about the perks, they felt trapped. Your career is about choice. Iâll say it again: Your career is about choice. In a nutshell: If youâre wearing golden handcuffs, trapped just by the perks or salary at your job and youâre not happy, then you are not âat choice.â Action step: To see if you are trapped, make a list of the top five reasons why you stay at your job; then ask yourself if each is a good reason to stay.
